Whenever my class gets noisy or when they're talking when they should be listening I simply have them sit down for a moment and then I have them stand up again. Making them sit down gets their attention and refocuses them. I don't have to get mad either. If they're rude a second time we sit and stand twice. Eventually they help each other remember to be quiet so they don't have to sit again. What do you do?

| Thanks, Rod. That's a helpful suggestion that I will immediately put into practice. I just started teaching a class of a dozen African-American kids who have never put on a pair of dance shoes before. I'm a volunteer teacher at the Robinson Theater Community Arts Center in Richmond, Virginia. It's an historic theater with an amazing story that I'd love to share with the tap community. If you have a chance, would you visit www.RobinsonTheater.org? The theater is named for Bill "Bojangles" Robinson who is a native son of Richmond. It's been derelict and abandoned for over 2 decades until it just reopened in February! |

Well, I am so happy to be able and sign in to this forum! I loooove the site, keep up the good work ;)
Well, I teach tap to some noisy tweens (7 - 12 years) They can get very loud! We have a "rule" that if I put my hands in the air they must get quiet (and keep their shoes quiet) because more than likely I have something important to say. I just kinda raise my hands in the air a bit and it works everytime. Must be a miracle! =)
=^.^= Keep on your toes!! |

Shisharoo,
That sounds like a good technique and most importantly it's working for you! I have to say, that for the most part, my kids are pretty good and I don;t have to sit them down very often, although there always seems to be that one class.....
